Bridging Cultures: The Italian Jitney

In 2023, Renzo Carbonera made history by directing the first-ever Italian translation of August Wilson's Jitney in Vicenza, featuring a cast of second-generation Afro-Italian actors. This evening, you'll delve into the fascinating journey of bringing Wilson's narrative, deeply rooted in African American culture, to an Italian audience. Carbonera will illuminate the challenges and triumphs of this remarkable cultural exchange through a discussion and exclusive film clips.

A Deep Dive into August Wilson's World

Despite his profound influence on American literature and theatre, August Wilson remains relatively unknown in Italy. Wilson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, authored works such as Fences, which wereadapted into a film starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2016. Carbonera's project seeks to introduce Wilson's work to Italian audiences while drawing poignant parallels between the social issues depicted in Jitney and contemporary challenges in Italy, such as immigration and racism.
