The PLIDA Certificate

The Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis–St. Paul (ICC) is an official exam center for the PLIDA Certification (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri). We are among the few institutions in North America authorized to administer the PLIDA exam and the only certified center in Minnesota.

The PLIDA certificate is an official diploma issued by the Società Dante Alighieri (SDA), in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of Rome “La Sapienza.” It is recognized by the Italian Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and the Italian Ministry of University and Research as a formal qualification of Italian language proficiency for non-native speakers.

The PLIDA certification assesses proficiency in Italian as a foreign language across six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2), in alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Why take the PLIDA exam?

  • To apply for Italian citizenship (minimum level: B1)
  • To study at Italian universities (requirements vary; typically a minimum of B2)
  • To obtain college credit as a U.S. high school or college student
  • To apply for a Permit of Stay in Italy (minimum level: A2)
  • As a capstone achievement after completing Italian language courses

    Dates of exams

PLIDA certification sessions are held each year according to the official calendar established by the PLIDA office in Rome. Please check this page regularly for updates or contact Sabrina Infante, Esaminatrice e Responsabile per la Certificazione PLIDA, at sabrina@theitalianculturalcenter.org for more information.

The PLIDA certification exam is administered in person at the ICC Exam Center, in accordance with the rules, regulations, and dates established by the Società Dante Alighieri (PLIDA headquarters).
