Le Vie del Vino: Alto Adige/Südtirol

LIVE WINE EDUCATION

Wednesday, December 9, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm CDT via Zoom
Conversations will be in English

If expanding your experience with Italian wine beyond the classic regions of Chianti and Piedmont is of interest, then join us for an evening of discussing the beautiful Northern Italian wine region of Alto Adige/Südtirol. Though one of Italy's smallest wine regions, accounting for a mere 1% of wine produced, it produces some of the most unique, crisp, fresh and aromatic wines in all of Italy.

Alto Adige/Südtirol is one of the most beautiful wine regions on earth (if not THE most!) with stunning snow-capped mountains peaks and lush green valleys within the Dolomite mountains to the north and views of the Mediterranean to the south. Once you discover the unique nuances and character of wines from this northern Italian mountain region, you'll be asking yourself why you haven't been drinking them all along!

We'll be discussing four varieties that produce truly unique "wines of place" that express the unique topography, soil and climate of the region.

Pinot Grigio - While this variety is often synonymous with bland, uninteresting and generally forgettable white wine, the Südtirol expression of Pinot Grigio is one of the most beautiful, bright and aromatic versions found anywhere on earth.

Gewurztraminer - As with Pinot Grigio, this variety produces dry and off-dry, balanced and spicy white wines that are some of the most versatile food pairing wines. The Gewurztraminer produced in Südtirol are some of the most highly aromatic wines in the world.

Schiava - Is a local variety that, due to its moderate tannins, bright crisp acidity and floral aromatics, make it a great aperitif especially with a slight chill!

Lagrein - Known as the red-wine "Ambassador" of the Südtirol wine region, it is the most important red variety and produces deep colored, robust and aromatic medium-bodied wines.

The wine education will be expertly lead by David Johnson, Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers. He is passionate about Italy, its wines, and its beautiful language.

Enjoying this educational wine event with one or two of these wines is recommended but not mandatory. David Johnson will be tasting the following wines that can be found at Surdyk's: Alois Lageder - Pinot Grigio, Alois Lageder - Schiava, Adriano - Gewurztraminer, Adriano - Lagrein Rubeno.
