Wine Tasting Le Vie del Vino
Sangiovese: From the Tuscan Hills to Fellini's Romagna
Sangiovese is a red grape native to Tuscany. It is the most widespread Italian grape variety and the base grape of many excellent wines. Sangiovese is known as the 'Undisputed Lord of the Hills'. This grape has always been a source of energy for farmers, enjoyment for aristocrats and relief from the hard monastic rules for the clergy.
It is in fact in a monastery that this wine was first called Sangiovese. During a banquet, some distinguished guests asked the name of the red wine they were so fond of. A witty monk, taking cue from the location of the monastery on Colle Giove answered the name was “Sanguis Jovis” (Jupiter’s blood), hence Sangiovese.
Federico Fellini, the famous film director, always wanted a glass of Sangiovese on the table. This year is the 100th anniversary of his birthday and we are remembering and celebrating him with his favorite wine.
Join Italian wine specialist, Stefano Follega, for a wine tasting of the most notable Sangiovese wines. The featured wines will include Sangiovese della Maremma, Chianti, Super Tuscan, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino, and a Sangiovese from Fellini's Romagna. We will envision traveling through Tuscany with a special guest from the area, pay tribute to Fellini and enjoy appetizers in an elegant atmosphere.
The tasting will be Thursday evening, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM, March 26 at Dom Interiors, 275 Market Street, Suite 145, Minneapolis, MN 55405. Ample free parking is available.
