Films are a big part of the Italian cultural experience and are deeply woven in the country’s history. Since the development of the Italian film industry in the early 1900s, Italian filmmakers and performers have enjoyed great international acclaim and have influenced film movements throughout the world. As of 2021, Italian films have won 14 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, the most of any country.

Launched in 2009, our annual Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul presents a series of outstanding contemporary films along with timeless classics

Through the lens of drama, comedies and documentaries, our movies offer a new perspective on the country and its people. Take a journey to Italy without leaving Minnesota.

Explore Italy’s multicultural heritage with the special screening of ASMARINA

Asmarina is a powerful documentary that explores the lives of Eritrean and Ethiopian communities in Milan. Through personal testimonies and archival materials, Asmarina reveals the profound connections between migration, identity, and Italy’s colonial past, shedding light on an often-overlooked chapter of Italian history.

Following the screening, director Medhin Paolos will join us virtually for an insightful conversation exploring the past, present, and future of East African diasporas.

Before the screening, join us for a social hour to connect with fellow attendees and learn about three exciting upcoming festivals:
