Beginner/Intermediate Track

The beginner/intermediate track is designed for children with little to no experience with the Italian language. The 60 minute weekly lessons are conducted in Italian by university-educated instructors with native or native-like fluency and emphasize the gradual acquisition of basic reading, writing and grammar skills as students advance through the four levels. Students may enter the curriculum at any point. Please contact the Youth language school curriculum coordinator, Anna Maria Jaker, with questions regarding curriculum and/or placement. 

Parent volunteers organize informal opportunities for students and their parents to meet and interact with other families in more casual social settings. Previous outings have included a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, sledding and an authentic Italian winter meal at Powderhorn Park, a trip to the Caponi Art Park and Learning Center and making pizzas as guests of the Uptown Punch Pizza.


FOR THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/14 ALL ITALIAN LESSONS WILL BE OFFERED ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, AND NO LONGER ON SATURDAY MORNING. BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS IN LEVEL A, B, C WILL HAVE CLASSES FROM 2:00 - 3:00 PM IN ROOM 500, 501, 502 RESPECTIVELY.

Fall semester 2013 (12 weeks): September 15 - December 15, 2013; no classes on Sunday October 20 (Education Minnesota Conference) and Sunday December 1st (Thanksgiving). Christmas party (festa di Natale) will take place on the last lesson of December 15 in room 502.

Spring semester 2014 (12 weeks): January 26 - May 11, 2014; no classes on Sunday February 16 (Presidents' Day), Sunday March 16 (Carnevale), and from Sunday April 13 (SPRING BREAK) to Sunday April 20 (Easter).

Refund Policy
Students will receive a full tuition refund prior to the start of the first lesson in the semester, minus a $5 registration fee. Students can withdraw from the course prior to the second week of class, however an administrative fee of $25 will be retained. No refunds will be issued after the second week of class.

Weather Policy
Class cancellations resulting from bad weather will be posted on the Coordinator blog by 8:30 AM.  A make-up opportunity will be offered.

Resource Center
ICC members are invited to borrow materials from the children's resource center.

    A 60 minute immersion lesson followed by a school wide snack for junior high to high school youth. Students will continue to expand their vocabulary, refine their oral communication skills, and make correct use of grammar rules in their free writing. They will practice the proper use of conditional tenses. Lesson topics will include Italian literature and a wide variety of cultural elements. The students will use the textbook Espresso 1 written in Italian, plus grammar materials derived from Espresso Grammatica and other ICC resources. The Espresso 1 can be ordered from the applauselearning.com web site. 

    No classes on Sunday October 20 (Minnesota Education Conference) and Sunday December 1st (Thanksgiving). Our traditional Christmas party will coincide with the last lesson of December 15, and will take place in room 502.

Students will read Italian texts correctly and apply basic rules of grammar when writing sentences or paragraphs. Special attention will be devoted to verbal forms (indicativo futuro, imperfetto e passato prossimo). A wide variety of topics and cultural elements will guide the students to practice and refine their oral and written communication skills. 

    The students will use the textbook Espresso 1 written in Italian, plus grammar materials derived from Espresso Grammatica, and other ICC resources. Espresso 1 can be ordered through the applauselearning.com web site.

    No classes on Sunday October 20 (Minnesota Education Conference) and Sunday December 1st (Thanksgiving). Our traditional Christmas party will coincide with the last lesson of December 15, and will take place in room 502.

    A 60 minute immersion lesson followed by a communal snack for children early to mid elementary school level. Students will learn to read and write the special sounds of the Italian language (digrammi), and use correctly some basic elements of grammar (articolo, presente indicativo). They will develop good reading and writing skills, from single words to small sentences. They will expand vocabulary and oral communication skills through interactive songs, stories, games and imaginative play. The Italian cultural aspects will be presented in greater detail throughout the curriculum. 

    Students will use the Raccontami 2 textbook mainly for vocabulary expansion, and a series of booklets developed by Anna Maria Jaker and Carmela Parisi for the gradual acquisition of correct reading and writing. The textbook should be purchased by parents before the first day of class. Used books may be sold and/or purchased through the ICC forum.

    No classes on Sunday October 20 (Minnesota Education Conference) and Sunday December 1st (Thanksgiving). Our traditional Christmas party will coincide with the last lesson of December 15, and will take place in room 502.

    A 60 minute immersion lesson followed by a communal snack for children pre-school to Kindergarten and early elementary. Students will prepare for reading and writing: they will become familiar with the sounds of the Italian alphabet, vowels and syllables; they will develop vocabulary and oral communication skills through interactive songs, stories, games and imaginative play; they will gradually write letters and short words.

     Students will use the "Raccontami 1" textbook and a series of workbooks developed by Anna Maria Jaker for the course of the two to three year cycle. The workbooks are included in the tuition, but the textbook should be purchased by parents before the first day of class. Used books may be sold and/or purchased through the ICC forum.
