Ferragosto, the mid-August Italian holiday, is celebrated in Italy with picnics and informal outdoor gatherings. The Italian Cultural Center invites you and your family to a picnic-style celebration to be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Tartan Park in Lake Elmo, on Saturday, August 23, 2014. Tartan Park is located at 11455 20th Street North in Lake Elmo.

This year’s Ferragosto will feature an Italian- themed picnic buffet by Prom Catering. The buffet will include:

    •  Italian sausage cooked on the grill with pepper and onions
    •  Hot dogs and buns for the kids
    •  Farfalle pasta salad with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil vinaigrette
    •  Sliced watermelon
    •  Brownies and popsicles
    •  Soft drinks and bottled water

A cash bar, for the purchase of wine, beer (including some Italian varieties), mixed drinks, and additional soft drinks, will be available.  Please note that it is not possible to bring in alcoholic beverages at Tartan Park, but the cash bar will be open throughout the event.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME to attend. Cost for the event is $20 for non-members.  We are pleased to offer a special member cost of $12 per adult and all children under 10 will be admitted at a cost of $5. Registration will close on August 17.

The event will feature our 3rd annual bocce ball tournament! There is no cost to play, but all bocce participants must purchase picnic tickets, and must indicate if they want to play. Please join us for some fun!

The ICC will organize two-man teams; there will be a maximum of 16 teams (first to sign-up will play). Upon registering to play, indicate the name of your desired partner, and include an Italian name for your team. Be creative!  If you wish to play as an individual, let us know, and we will try to match you with another player.  Some prizes will be awarded.

Register today, and meet us on the Tartan Park at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 23rd.

    ICC Bocce Ball Tournament Rules:

    1) Play will begin with a coin toss; winner throws Pallino, loser chooses color.

    2) The Pallino must pass the center line, and it must not touch the backboard.  If the player fails to toss the Pallino properly, the opposing team takes the Pallino.  If the opposing team fails, the Pallino reverts back to the original team.

    3) Balls tossed, which hit the backboard, are out of play.  If a ball hits another ball first, and then hits the backboard, it remains in play.

    4) The first ball is thrown by the team that tossed the Pallino.

    5) The opposing team then tosses the second ball. They throw until their ball BEATS (not ties) the opposing ball.

    6) When a team beats the opposing ball, it steps aside and lets the other team roll.

    7) Teams keep throwing, in this manner, until all balls are gone.

    8) After all balls have been thrown, the winning team has the closest ball to the Pallino.  One point is awarded to that ball and any others that is closer to the Pallino than the closest ball of the opposing team.

    9) The winner of each frame throws the next Pallino.

    10) Play in each game will continue until 9 points are scored.
